Textbook Collection

Students often request textbooks from the library, but print textbooks are poor candidates for library purchase due to their expense and ephemeral nature and publishers typically do not allow libraries to purchase electronic textbooks for institutional use. Also, library holdings cannot legally serve as an alternative to students purchasing their required course materials.

However, to support student success, we do keep a limited number of textbooks on reserve, and they are listed in our catalog with the location “Main Library Help Desk.” This reserves collection primarily includes required readings assigned in undergraduate courses. They are available for use in the library only, generally with a 2-hour checkout period. We hope this service is useful to students, especially at the beginning of the term when books may be unavailable or on back order. Faculty members may help us build this collection by donating extra copies of textbooks at the Main Library Help Desk.
