Borrowing Materials

You may borrow materials from the EKU Libraries if you are a currently enrolled student, faculty, staff, or retired faculty or staff.

Members of the Alumni Association, Friends of the Library group and residents of our service region are also eligible for circulation privileges. Please see Non-University Borrowers for information on obtaining a card.
Library Cards
A current barcoded university or library ID card is required to check out materials. If you have forgotten your ID, library staff will accept a driver's license.

Should your card become lost or stolen, it is important that you notify the EKU Libraries as quickly as possible. If your card is used without your knowledge, you will still be held responsible for items, borrowed, lost or damaged.
Loan Periods
Main collection books are loaned for a 2 weeks to undergraduates, staff, alumni and area residents. Honors Program and graduate students receive loan periods of 4 weeks. Faculty and graduate assistants receive 120 day loans. Popular Collection and Staff Picks books circulate for 2 weeks regardless your loan category.

A 'date due slip' is printed for each item borrowed and shows when the book is due.
Renewing Materials
  • Renew in person, or
  • Renew by phone at 622-1790, or
  • Renew online in eQuest, our library catalog
(You must renew your books before they become overdue or the online option is not available).
    • Click YOUR LIBRARY ACCOUNT to bring up your record.
    • Enter the barcode from your student ID or library card and your last name.
    • Click the LOGIN button
    • Click in the RENEW box by each item you want to renew
    • Click the RENEW ITEMS button and note the new due dates.
You may renew your books twice. If you still need more time, you must bring the books back to the circulation desk. It may be possible to borrow the books again, as long as no one has placed a hold/recall on the book.
Returning Materials
Please return your library materials to the Circulation Desk at the Main Library or at any of the branch libraries. For your convenience, a book drop is available at the entrance to the main building.
Overdue Notices & Charges
Enjoy the Library's no fine policy, but remember - you will receive a bill for any replacement charges if the books are not returned.

Overdue notices are sent one day following the due date and again after 2 weeks. If not returned within 30 days of their due date, the item(s) are considered lost and you will be billed for the replacement costs.

Replacement items purchased by the patron will not be accepted in lieu of payment for lost items.
Quantity of Books
All EKU students, faculty, staff, retired faculty/staff and eligible Model students may check out an unlimited quantity of books. Other library patrons are limited to 3 books checked out or on hold at one time.
Periodicals
Faculty and graduate students with a valid ID may check out any of the following:
  • bound volumes, for one day
  • current issues (except the most recent), for one day
  • the most recent issue, for two hours
Periodical photocopies and microfiche or microfilm prints may be charged to a university department inter-account at 10 cents per page. Please ask for information at the Periodicals Desk.

For the most up-to-date news, check the current newspapers located in room 106C.
Proxy Borrower
EKU faculty may authorize assistants to check out Library materials on their behalf. These assistants must be employed by the University or be registered students. With this arrangement, the faculty member agrees to be responsible for any materials borrowed on their behalf, including the return of all materials or the payment of replacement charges for items that are lost or damaged. Proxy authorization may be granted for up to one academic year and may be renewed as necessary.
Faculty/Staff Spouse/Domestic Partner
Spouses and/or domestic partners of current EKU faculty and staff may borrow materials from EKU libraries.
Model Students and Children of EKU Employees
Students in the 8th grade or above who are children of EKU employees and EKU Model School students 8th grade and above may borrow materials from the EKU Libraries.
  1. The parent/legal guardian of the student must sign an application form, in which the parent/legal guardian acknowledges responsibility for any charges incurred by the student at EKU Libraries.
  2. If the student incurs charges sufficient to block his/her borrowing privileges, the parent/legal guardian's privileges will also be blocked until the matter is resolved.
Fill out the application form and bring to Circulation Desk with the student to obtain the library card.

This non-university borrower's card will allow your child to have the same check-out privileges as an undergraduate student. Books will have a loan period of two weeks, with no limit on the number of books.
Non-University Borrowing
Adults (18 years and older) who are not directly affiliated with the University but reside within the EKU service region may obtain a library card.
