University Archives - Map Index Database

Introduction
The Map Index Database indexes the EKU Map Collection which comprises more than 650 individual maps dating from 1755-1995. The maps in the collection consist of highway maps, specialty maps that were done for advertising or tourism purposes, official government maps such as United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS), maps cut out of atlases or other publications, and maps that indicate topography, railroads, gas fields, farms and other features, and maps separated from books housed in our Special Collections. The majority of maps in this collection relate to Kentucky, but there are also some maps of the early American colonies and other states. The collection is currently divided into 18 categories that represent our best estimate of how the collection will be used, but categories are also dictated to a certain extent by format and publisher (as in the case of United States Geological Survey, or USGS, maps). The database includes fields for category, title/description, notes, date, scale, cartographer, and publication information, however, only the title/description and notes fields are searchable at this time.

Search Tips

You may enter several keywords but the search will be in the order the words are entered. For example: entering Horse Cave will produce fewer results than entering Cave alone because in addition to “Horse Cave” entries such as “Mammoth Cave” or “Cave Run” match the keyword in the search request. Do not use any kind of quotation marks in the search box.
